Fastpitch Softball Catchers plan to understand and Call Pitches and Team Defenses

Set aside some time early in the season to develop pitch calling signs with your coach. Every player on the field must be able to see the signs the catcher is giving to the pitcher so they can adjust accordingly. Take that into consideration when creating your pitch calling signs. Distribute signs early in season so players can memorize them. Make sure players are not confused about the signs and make adjustments to the signs if they are causing problems.

Your team will develop different defenses in an attempt to react to different offensive plays the other team is attempting to execute. Defensive plays are built around the players abilities. As the season progresses the coaches and you will get to know your player's strengths and weaknesses. As the coaches are teaching team defenses, ask questions. You must understand each and every one of your defensive plays in order to be able to call the right defensive play for the game situation. Defensive play calls are often a mix of vocal and visual signs.

Every player on the field must hear and see the plays you are calling. Be loud and confident! Take charge!
