So you want to be a catcher? Can you handle the role?
1) The Catcher is the only defensive player that can see the entire field, thus the catcher must be the captain and leader of your team's defense. The complete catcher will take responsibility and ownership of the task of understanding and calling the team's defensive plays. Make a plan with your coaches today!
2) A great team doesn't need great catchers! They need great blockers! A coach can put the weakest player on a team behind the plate and she'll catch the balls thrown right down the middle most every time. A complete catcher will spend a good deal of her private practice time working on blocking drills. Your greatest pleasure is making a bad pitch look easy to keep in front of you.
3) A complete catcher will understand the game well enough to allow the coach to let her call pitches in a game. No one on the field is in a better position to see and understand the batters and runners and the offensive play they are trying to execute. Take ownership of this role now!
4) Don't expect the coaches to allow you to call pitches and defenses. Earn the job! One doesn't wake up one day and become a leader. The players on your team will not respect your leadership unless you earn it. No one on the team should work harder, ask more questions, know more or show more sportsmanship than the team's catchers. A team's integrity and moral starts with you.
5) Protect the umpire! By treating the umpire with respect and showing real concern for their safety you are creating a friend behind the plate.
6) All throws to first base should be backed up by the catcher.
